Dr. Smith is a graduate of Cornell University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She completed her general surgery internship and urology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Smith completed a two year fellowship at University of California, Los Angeles, in Female Urology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. She is extensively trained in pelvic floor and voiding dysfunction with expertise in video-urodynamic evaluation and surgical reconstruction with an emphasis on minimally invasive techniques including vaginal surgery and robotics.
Dr. Smith is trained to treat many of the most complex disorders of the urinary tract in both men and women. The spectrum includes pelvic organ prolapse, cystocele repair, rectocele repair, robotic sacrocolpopexy, hysterectomy, urinary incontinence, sling operations, artificial urinary sphincters, stool incontinence, bladder dysfunction, neuromodulation, intravesical botox, neurogenic bladder, augmentation cystoplasty, continent and incontinent urinary diversions, orthotopic neobladders, pelvic pain, urinary fistulas (vesicovaginal, rectovaginal, rectoprostatic fistulas), urethral and bladder diverticuli, prostatic enlargement, TURP and Laser TURP procedures, urethral strictures, interstitial cystitis, hematuria, urinary tract infection, and pelvic reconstructive procedures using flaps and grafts.
Dr. Smith has been involved nationally in the American Urologic Association, Society for Female Urology and Urodynamics and the International Continence Society, having presented several abstracts in both clinical and basic science research. She received grant funding from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine to complete her research studies on the use of stems cells for bladder dysfunction. Dr. Smith has also been the principal investigator for urologic research involving epidemiology of urinary incontinence, post-prostatectomy incontinence, stress induced bladder dysfunction, and the effects of aging on urodynamics and the bladder. She recently received NIH funding as Co-Principal Investigator for the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network at Penn.
Dr. Smith has taught and mentored dozens of medical students and residents and has been involved in urologic education. She has published several articles and editorials in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored several text book chapters over the last few years.
She is currently involved in building a state-of-the-art program in Pelvic Medicine and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital while delivering excellent and compassionate care for the patients of the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

Research
Dr. Smith is involved in several areas of research within the Division of Urology at the University of Pennsylvania with a main focus on bladder dysfunction and incontinence. She has spent time in the basic science laboratory evaluating stem cells for the treatment of bladder dysfunction and studying the impact of psychological stress on voiding function. She has completed several clinical research projects looking at the epidemiology of bladder disease and outcomes of incontinence intervention. She also participates in clinical trials and has been the principal investigator for studies on interstitial cystitis. She continues to integrate basic science and clinical urology through partnership and collaboration with the urological science laboratory.
