Dr. Spray is chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, director of the Hospital's Thoracic Organ Transplantation Program and Alice Langdon Warner professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Spray received his medical degree and training in general and cardiothoracic surgery at the Duke University School of Medicine. He continued specialty training at the National Institutes of Health before joining the staff at Washington University, St. Louis, going on to become chief of cardiothoracic surgery there. He joined the staff at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 1994.

Dr. Spray takes a creative, individualized approach to reconstructive operations in neonates and infants and is a proponent of early corrective repair when possible. Dr. Spray has also maintained the Hospital's preeminence in the management of infants and children with complex "single ventricle" physiology. He is an internationally recognized leader in the application of the pulmonary autograft as a replacement for the aortic valve ("Ross procedure") in the pediatric population. He has contributed widely to the literature in congenital cardiothoracic surgery and holds numerous leadership positions in national and international professional associations.

Dr. Spray also brought to the institution unique capabilities in pediatric heart and lung transplantation. In just a few years, the program has become the most comprehensive service of its kind on the eastern seaboard. Infants and children with a wide variety of complex cardiac and pulmonary disorders, for whom transplantation is the optimal treatment, can be fully evaluated and treated by a specialized multidisciplinary team at Children's Hospital under Dr. Spray's direction. Recently, Dr. Spray performed the Hospital's first living-related donor lung transplant. He has also successfully transplanted a series of children following a period on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a "bridge" to transplant.

Under Dr. Spray's leadership, a multidisciplinary approach to the care of pediatric cardiothoracic patients was put in place. Cardiac services at Children's Hospital have now expanded to provide total care for the full range of infants and children with congenital cardiothoracic disorders.
