Justin B. Ziemba, MD is currently an Assistant Professor of Urology in Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Ziemba attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for his undergraduate studies. While there, he received a prestigious Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Fellowship. He graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science in molecular and cellular biology in 2006. After completing his undergraduate degree, he attended the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, earning his medical degree in 2010. He stayed at the University of Pennsylvania to complete his general surgery internship and urologic surgery residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2015. Following his residency, he spent 2 years as a clinical and research fellow in minimally invasive surgery and endourology (kidney stone surgery) at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Instructor of Urology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Dr. Ziemba’s clinical focus is on the surgical treatment and medical management of kidney stone disease. This clinical focus is supported by his research interests in the metabolic causes of kidney stone formation, imaging support for the diagnosis and treatment of kidney stones, and the health-related quality of life for patients with kidney stone disease. He was the recipient of a prestigious Data Grant from the American Urological Association and a McCabe Foundation Award from the University of Pennsylvania.

He also remains committed to improving health care quality and patient safety. He has advanced training in quality improvement methodology and adverse event investigation through a graduate certificate from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. He is active in the American Urological Association by serving as a member of the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee. He has also served on several hospital committees aimed at improving the care provided to patients at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. In 2015, he was awarded the Quality and Patient Safety Innovator Award from the University of Pennsylvania Health System for his efforts to enhance high-value care among trainees.
