Research

2009 - 2010
Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship
Mount Sinai School of Medicine

Title: Outcomes and comparative effectiveness research in cardiothoracic surgery.
Preceptors: David H. Adams, M.D., and Joanna Chikwe, M.D.
Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Mount Sinai School of Medicine
Conducted numerous retrospective studies in cardiac surgical cohorts. Topics included outcomes of mitral repair versus replacement in octogenarians, outcomes of aortic valve replacement in the setting of low-flow, low-gradient aortic stenosis, the benefit of routine concomitant tricuspid annuloplasty at the time of mitral valve surgery, and the impact of residual pulmonary hypertension on clinical outcome following mitral valve surgery.

2006 - 2010
Co-Investigator, Mount Sinai School of Medicine
Title: Treatment of anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions.
Preceptor: Stephen E. Goldstone, M.D.
Department of Surgery, Mount Sinai School of Medicine

Conducted retrospective studies examining the utility of Hybrid Capture II in evaluating men who have sex with men with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, as well as the impact of HIV on recurrence of HSIL following Infra-red Coagulator ablation of anal high-grade dysplasia.

2007 - 2008
Research Fellow, Mount Sinai School of Medicine
Title: Impact of interindividual/intraspecies bone morphology and tissue quality on skeletal robusticity.
Preceptor: Karl J. Jepsen, Ph.D.
Department of Orthopaedics, Mount Sinai School of Medicine

FTIR imaging and tissue-level mechanical testing were performed on femora of AJ, B6, and C3H inbred mice to determine if genetic variation in bone quality and tissue-level mechanical properties exist within species. In a separate study, human hand radiographs were examined to test the hypothesis that interindividual variation in skeletal robusticity is compensated morphologically during postnatal growth.

2005 - 2006
Senior Thesis Research, Duke University
Title: Inactivation of Cu,Zn Superoxide Dismutase by H2O2: Mechanism of Protection
Preceptor: Irwin Fridovich, Ph.D.
Department of Biochemistry, Duke University
Studies were performed in order to determine the mechanism by which molecules of varying sizes protect Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase from inactivation by HO2-.
