Dr. Murken is a fifth year surgery resident planning to pursue a career in abdominal transplant surgery. He grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from Penn State with a degree in Chemistry in 2008. He received his MD from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2012. He is currently a research fellow in the lab of Dr. Matthew Levine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. His basic science research focuses on developing murine models to elucidate key genes and pathways, specifically the role of histone deacetylase proteins, involved in iscehmia-reperfusion injury in kidney and liver transplantation. He is also involved in the development and now implementation of a phase two clinical trial -- the PERT trial -- designed to evaluate the efficacy of peri-operative estrogen administration in the mitigation of ischemia reperfusion injury in the setting of kidney transplantation.
