The administrative structure within the Division of Surgical Education is as follows: Jon B. Morris, M.D. serves as the General Surgery Residency Program Director as well as Vice Chair of Education. He receives advice on educational issues from the Associate Program Directors, Noel N. Williams, M.D., Rachel Kelz, M.D. and Alan Schuricht, M.D., and the Departmental Education Committee, which includes faculty representatives from general surgery and subspecialty divisions at HUP and affiliated institutions. He reports on the activities of the Surgical Education Division to James Mullen, M.D., Interim Chairman of the Department of Surgery. Mark Malachesky, Director of Surgical Education Administration, manages the daily operations of the Division of Surgical Education (DSE) and assists the Vice Chair and Chairman with the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the housestaff.
The Department has many training programs: General Surgery; Vascular Surgery; Cardiothoracic Surgery; Plastic Surgery; Transplantation Surgery; Craniofacial Surgery; Trauma and Surgical Critical Care; Pediatric Surgery; Neurosurgery; Urology; and Integrated General-Plastic Surgery. Chairmen of other departments (Orthopaedic Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Oral Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Internal Radiology) assigning residents to General Surgery for initial training work closely with the DSE but maintain formal administrative responsibility for their residents.
The Residents' Executive Council (REC) provides advice and information to the Education Committee. Chaired by a two senior general surgery residents, this forum is open to all surgical residents. This group develops proposals concerning educational plans and is the forum for active resident input into the program structure and administration. Monthly meeting minutes are circulated to all residents. A Faculty member of the Department of Surgery is identified as the Graduate Surgical Education Coordinator at each affiliate hospital. These individuals have frequent direct contact with the Graduate Surgical Education Division and play an integral role in the overall departmental educational plan.
