All housestaff in Department of Surgery training programs must receive a minimum of 3 weeks vacation, as assigned and approved at the sole discretion of the Program Director. Individual program policies are included below:
Breast Surgery Program
Breast Surgery Fellows receive 3 weeks of vacation annually. Vacation time must be arranged with the Program Director. This time is in addition to time allotted for out of town conference attendance and job interviews.
CT Fellows receive 3 weeks of vacation annually. Vacation time must be submitted to the Program Director. This time is in addition to time allotted for out of town conference attendance and job interviews.
Colon and Rectal Surgery
Colon and rectal surgery residents will be allowed 4 weeks paid vacation time, including one week during the winter holiday period. Requests for vacation must be made in writing to the Program Director at least 3 weeks in advance of the requested time off. Approval is based on the discretion of the Program Director.
General Surgery Program
CY 1 and 2 Residents receive 2 weeks of vacation time annually. Vacation requests must be submitted to the Director of Surgical Education Administration by the designated annual date. Vacation requests are not guaranteed as there are many residents to accommodate. The best effort will be made to honor requests. CY1 residents continuing for a second year receive a ten day vacation from June 20-30.
CY 3-5 Residents receive 4 weeks of vacation annually. CY 3-5 residents set up their own schedule. The Surgery Education office will arrange for a designated time for the CY team members to meet to create their schedule. The schedule is created one year at a time and vacation preference is given to those residents getting married or expecting children during that period. Schedule parameters are set by the Program Director.
Plastic Surgery Program
Residents may take three non-consecutive weeks of vacation annually. Vacation requests must be submitted in writing at least 30 days in advance and must be approved by the site director of the rotation to which the resident will be assigned at the time of vacation and by Kris Gallagher and the program director. It is the responsibility of the resident to arrange for his/her own coverage prior to vacation, including appropriate coverage of clinics, the OR, floor call, and ER call. Notification of such coverage must be provided in writing to Kris Gallagher, the faculty, the residents, and the hospital operator(s).
Guidelines for Vacation Requests
Surgical Critical Care/Trauma Training Programs
Each fellow is entitled to four weeks of vacation each academic year, including three days around the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Vacation must be requested and approved in advance; vacation during and around the holiday may be assigned by the program director. Vacation requests and applications for leave shall be submitted to the program director or his/her designee.
Thoracic Surgery Training Program
Thoracic Surgery Residents receive 3 weeks of vacation annually. Vacation time must be submitted to the Program Director. This time is in addition to time allotted for out of town conference attendance and job interviews.
Transplant fellows will also have 14 days off for vacation during the academic year. These 14 days can be taken consecutively or broken up over the year so long as there is adequate coverage. Each fellow will have the opportunity to take 2 days off at either Christmas or New Years. Each fellow will also have an additional 14 days for recruitment interviews or travel to academic meetings.
Each resident is entitled to 3 weeks vacation per year of clinical urology training.
