Resident Benefits


Policy revised July 1, 2011

SurgCash allows Department of Surgery housestaff to be reimbursed by the Department for a scientific meeting/conference, membership dues and other educational items including but not limited to books, CME courses, or surgical equipment. Conferences at which residents are presenting will be funded outside of Surg Cash (see below).

SurgCash is updated each July with the following amounts:

  • CY1/2 - $250
  • CY3 - $500
  • CY4/5 - $1,500
  • CY6+ - $2,000

Meetings, Travel, and Reimbursement

The division will reimburse residents for travel to an approved regional, national, or international meeting at which they are presenting a paper.

Resident Offices

Residents are provided with desk soace from the beginning of their time at Penn. Offices at HUP are on the 14th floor of South Tower in the Perelman Center adjacent to the administrative offices of the plastic surgery faculty. This provides a home base for plastic surgery residents regardless of what rotation they are on as well as an environment for them to accomplish scholarly work. Computers, desks, and storage space are provided.

ASPS Residents and Fellows Forum subscription

Residents are provided with a complimentary membership to the Residents and Fellows Forum of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Benefits, outlined on the ASPS website, include a subscription to Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.


There is a small gym located on the 14th floor of South Tower in the Perelman Center, accessible by plastic surgery residents at all times.

Call Room

There is a call room with a high quality mattress located on the 14th floor of South Tower in the Perelman Center available for on call residents who are too tired to drive home while on call.

Cadaver Lab

The Penn Human Tissue Lab is a state-of-the-art cadaver lab accessible to plastic surgery residents for fresh cadaver dissections. These are usually held twice every academic year.
