Training Program
THORACIC SURGERY

Eligibility, Selection,
Recruitment and NRMP Policy

The Thoracic Surgery Residency program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is open to surgical residents who have completed a general surgery residency and are board certified or eligible. Applicants from outside of the United States must have current certification by the Educational Committee for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to be eligible for licensure in the State of Pennsylvania. The Thoracic Surgery Program is a two-year fellowship, accepting two people each year to the Cardiac Track and one person into the Thoracic Track. In order to apply to our program, you must submit the required materials to Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Applications must include the following materials: MSPE (Dean’s Letter), three letters of recommendation, Personal Statement, Transcript from Medical School, USMLE Transcript and ABSITE transcript. We participate in the National Residency Match Programs (NRMP) match process. Once all application materials are received the Program Director will review the application. Selected applicants are invited to interview and receive the invitation by email from the Program Coordinator. There are two interview days each year. All applicants who were not selected to interview will receive notification by the program coordinator.

An applicant is eligible for appointment only after a negative result on a pre-employment drug test as administered by the UPHS Drug Testing Program and a satisfactory criminal background check (GME Policy #III-G House Staff Onboarding, UPHS Policy #02-01-14 and #02-01-13).
