The Office of Life Support Education was established in 1993 as an American Heart Association Community Training Center, providing ACLS courses for the Health System and the community at large. These courses are now provided by the Penn Medicine at Rittenhouse Clinical Simulation Center.
OLSE offers courses and programs in the fields of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Emergency Surgery. Courses are taught by a cadre of instructors from Surgery, Advanced Practice Nursing, Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, as well as clinicians with an expertise in various fields. Many courses are taught using lecture, small group, and simulation techniques. The OLSE Medical Director is José Pascual, M.D., Ph.D., FRCS(C), FRCP(C). The OLSE Clinical Education Coordinator is Anne Ravdin Taylor, RN.
Our current course offerings include: ASSET, ATLS, ATCN, ATOM, DMEP, FCCS, The Trauma Nurse Course, a variety of workshops including U/S-ECHO (a basic ultrasound workshop), S.E.W. (a basic suturing workshop), SCRUB (a basic scrubbing/ gowning/ gloving workshop) and R.E.A.D. (a scan reading workshop), 2ND TRAUMA and a variety of internal education programs. In addition, we offer 2 annual conferences, covering a wide variety of Trauma and Critical Care topics with interesting speakers and experts in their fields. We welcome both UPHS and external attendees to the majority of our programs. Continuing education credits for Physicians and Nurses are provided for most of our programs.
