VASCULAR SURGERY and
ENDOVASCULAR THERAPY

Overall Educational Goals
PGY7 - HUP Vascular Surgery
  1. Patient Care
    1. To develop the judgment with which to evaluate and treat patients with vascular disease at the level of a board certified specialist.
    2. Fully capable in in-patient and out-patient evaluations of the management of patients.
    3. To attain competence in the operative and non-operative treatment of patients with vascular disease.
    4. Full operative case load to meet ACGME requirements as far as numbers and depth
  2. Medical Knowledge
    1. To attain competence in both endovascular and open vascular procedures, including the appropriate preprocedural evaluation, procedural conduct and post procedural care and follow-up of the patients. This is to include the judgment and skill needed to discern what course of care would be best for each patient, including non-operative therapy.
    2. Full understanding of both vascular basic science and clinical medicine
  3. Practice Based Learning and Improvement
    1. Demonstrate ability to implement and simulate what has been learned during fellow’s daily practice.
    2. Develop a pattern of continual education to keep abreast of the developments and improvements in our field to maintain delivery of state of the art care.
    3. Facilitate learning of students, residents and other health care professionals.
    4. To have a familiarity with the noninvasive vascular laboratory and understand and be able to use the studies provided there for clinical use.
  4. Interpersonal and Communication Skills
    1. To communicate and work effectively with all health care providers and hospital employees.
    2. To be able to communicate information to the patient and family effectively.
  5. Professionalism
    1. To demonstrate compassion and respect for patient and family.
    2. To uphold patients’ privacy and rights.

    4. Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ culture, age, gender, and disabilities.

    1. Demonstrate the ability to work and navigate through all hospital systems.
    2. Practice cost-effective health care and resource allocation that does not compromise quality care.
    3. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with other hospital employees.
    4. Understand how patient care and other professional practices affect other health care professionals, the health care organization.

On a more specific level pertaining to the clinical months, the fellows will mature their angiographic skills. They will be expected to develop complete knowledge of all wires, devices, and inventory. They will learn to perform upper extremity angio/intervention, renal/visceral pta/stent, carotid pta/stent, and aortic stent grafting. They will also have an introduction to complex endovascular techniques such as aortic debranching. In terms of open procedures, they will be expected to have mastered technical skills such as fine suturing. They will learn the complete steps of each operation as the primary surgeon. For example, they will learn how to completely perform a carotid endarterectomy from start to finish and understand all of the decision-making during the procedure. Fellows will gradually learn and develop independence to ready them for practice. They will continue to participate in the preoperative, perioperative and postoperative care of the patients as well as participate in daily rounds and office hours. Again, the overall clinical rotations will not be different from month to month. However, each month will offer a large variety of cases and patients which can be tailored to the specific fellow’s abilities and needs.

The research rotations will offer continuation of active projects. They will continue to learn and mature their research skills. Fellows will see their ongoing work to completion. This will culminate in publications and presentations. They will complete their training in the vascular laboratory and be fully capable of taking the RVT or RPVI exam. They will be fully prepared to start in any academic or private setting.
