C. William Schwab, M.D.

Dr. Schwab is Chief of the Division and is known internationally for his work in damage control surgery and the care of complex trauma. In addition, he is the director of the Firearm and Injury Center at Penn (FICAP). This Center develops collaborative research to address violent injury and its repercussions on individual, families and communities and is a member of the Philadelphia Collaborative Violence Prevention Center with The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), a CDC-funded Academic Center of Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention.

Dr. Schwab’s current research interests include the development of an inter-disciplinary research network in stress and injury, the examination of trends and patterns of firearm injury and mortality, and participation in an National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded “Space-Time Adolescent Risk Study” to measure the extent to which adolescents are exposed to risk and protective factors over the course of their daily activities on the likelihood of being assaulted.
