The University of Pennsylvania Department of Surgery’s Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgery Training Program is an integrated six to eight year curriculum leading to certification in cardiothoracic surgery. The first two years include prerequisite clinical training in Surgery including rotations in General Surgery, Simulation, Cardiac ICU, Trauma, and Endocrine and Oncologic Surgery. Following this, there is an opportunity for two years of academic pursuits through either laboratory or clinical research opportunities or pursuit of a graduate degree in a related or ancillary field (e.g., M.P.H., M.B.A.). The final four clinical years focus on clinical training in Cardiothoracic Surgery including senior and chief rotations on vascular and endovascular surgery as well as additional training in cardiac imaging. In addition to offering a more rational, better focused, and more comprehensive training for future cardiothoracic surgeons in a more effective educational framework, this integrated curriculum will offer less onerous work weeks and a healthier lifestyle balance for residents.

The program is approved by the RRC in Thoracic Surgery to accept one candidate each year following medical school graduation.
