Patients
with hyperparathyroidism often require surgical exploration
to remove abnormal glands. Patients with hyperparathyroidism
can be candidates for minimally invasive surgery. Before
surgery, special x-ray tests are performed to locate
the abnormal parathyroid tissue. Minimally invasive
parathyroid surgery can be performed using local numbing
medicine and sedation or general anesthesia. In order
to be sure of a cure, we use intra-operative parathyroid
hormone monitoring during the procedure. Minimally invasive
parathyroidectomy is usually performed as an outpatient
procedure.
