The Division of
Surgical Oncology Program for the treatment of soft
tissue sarcomas involves an interdisciplinary approach
tailored to individual patients. This involves a multidisciplinary
approach with the surgical oncologist, medical oncologist,
radiation oncologist, and diagnostic radiologist. The
integration of these specialties leads to a high rate
of tumor control for extremity sarcomas without amputation.
The team evaluates patients and then chooses the best
strategies to allow for preservation of the limb, optimal
recovery, and optimal tumor control. Strategies such
as the integration of preoperative radiation therapy,
intraoperative brachytherapy (localized radiation therapy),
or postoperative radiation therapy for control are used.
Additionally, the Surgical Oncology
Team works in collaboration with Plastic Surgery to
allow for optimal recovery and healing following removal
of tumors. Following removal of tumors our surgical
