| Esophagus
and
Gastric Cancer
The esophageal and gastric cancer program
offers evaluation and therapy for patients with cancers of
the esophagogastric area. The division surgeons work in close
collaboration with the gastroenterologists and the oncologists
from the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center.
These physicians have provided improved patient care by a
multimodality approach to the patient with cancer. This includes
the complex diagnostic utilizing endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound,
radiologic diagnostic evaluation and nutrition evaluation
and support. The surgical division has pioneered the field
of nutritional support for gastrointestinal cancer patients,
which is crucial to the successful treatment plan for recovery.
A multidisciplinary approach utilizes
specialists from gastroenterology, medical oncology, radiation
oncology, surgery, radiology, pathology and the nutrition
service. The resources of the University of Pennsylvania Cancer
Center (approved and designated by the National Cancer Institute
as a comprehensive cancer center) provide access to new therapies
through a wide range of clinical protocols. Nationally recognized
physicians in the treatment and management of gastrointestinal
cancer are available to provide a team approach to therapy.
The surgical division has pioneered
multimodality methods of treatment and post-operative care
which are now applied nation-wide. Current management modalities
include application of laparoscopic procedures where indicated.
These include laparoscopy both in the diagnostic staging and
therapy.
