The
Division of Transplantation at the Hospital of the University
of Pennsylvania is under the overall direction of Abraham
Shaked, M.D., PhD. The University of Pennsylvania has
one of busiest clinical transplant centers in the country,
with active intraabdominal programs in liver, kidney, pancreas
and islet cell transplantation done from living and cadaveric
donors, providing exceptional global care for the transplant
recipient.
The liver and kidney programs at HUP are combined with the
transplant activities at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia.
During FY 2006, 218 kidney transplants, 21 pancreas transplants,
and 153 liver transplants were performed at both institutions.
At the surgical housestaff and transplant fellow level, there
is total integration of the care of all abdominal transplant
recipients. Pre and postoperative care is coordinated with
the transplant nephrology and hepatology consultants. General
surgery and vascular access procedures required by transplant
patients are performed on the transplant service, as well
as a significant number of hepatobiliary cases. All of the
transplant faculty have active basic science laboratories
and are nationally recognized leaders in their field.
