The
liver
transplant program at Penn is one of the top 10
programs in the country, and one of the few programs
that integrates clinical and basic science research
along side superb patient care. Patients are initially
evaluated by a multidisciplinary team that includes
surgery, hepatology, cardiology and psychiatry at the
time of evaluation. They are carefully followed while
on the waiting list with management of all the complexities
of end stage liver disease.
At the time of transplantation, the patients are cared
for on the transplant surgery service in cooperation
with our medical consultants. Innovative clinical programs
include adult living donor liver transplantation, expanded
donor criteria, treatment of recurrent hepatitis C,
transplantation for malignancy, and split liver transplantation.
Liver resections and complex biliary surgery is also
performed by the liver transplant service. The liver
program is part of the PENN
Transplant Center and is also combined with the
program at the Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia. |
