Thoracic Surgery

Dr. John Kucharczuk - ChiefThe division of Thoracic Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is known internationally as a leader in the treatment of diseases in the chest.

The University of Pennsylvania has one of the busiest Thoracic Surgery Programs in the country, performing over 1200 operations each year. The doctors in this section specialize in non-cardiac thoracic pathology. This includes, but is not limited to, benign and malignant pulmonary lesions including lung cancer, benign and malignant esophageal disease, mediastinal masses, thymoma, myasthenia gravis, chest wall diseases, pleural effusions, and hyperhidrosis. Treatment options are tailored for each patient at the time of their visit.

Our staff reviews each patients history and studies with them
to formulate the most appropriate plan of action. When appropriate, minimally invasive surgical techniques including robotic surgery are used. Specific information on each surgeon, specific problems or types of surgery may be obtained by going to the Clinical Care Section on this web site.

Patients are taken care of by the Thoracic Surgery Team. In addition to the surgeon, the nursing staff in the operating room specializes in thoracic procedures. The anesthesiologists have trained specifically in the field of chest anesthesia. Patients are taken care of on a floor with nurses, physical therapists, and respiratory therapists that have training and special interest in the thoracic surgery patient. Patients will be prepared to go home by a team who will identify and address medical as well as social needs. The thoracic surgery team provides exceptional global care for each patient.
