Dr. Farivar specializes in adult cardiac surgery, with a subspecialization in valve surgery, minimally invasive valve surgery, and complex reoperative surgery. He has expertise in mitral valve repair and replacement, as well as minimally invasive aortic valve surgery and TAVR. He has established the first JCAHO certified center for excellence in valve repair while at the University of Iowa.

His training was at the Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School as well as Children's Hospital Boston, for both General Surgery and Cardiac Surgery. He is a member of the 21st Century Cardiac Surgical Society. He is listed as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, and serves as a consultant to several medical device and valve companies in an advisory capacity. He holds several medical device patents.
