Dr. Jackson attended Haverford College, graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Physics in 1991. He then received a research fellowship from the Department of Engineering Physics in the School of Engineering at the University of Virginia, graduating in 1993 with a Master's of Science. He subsequently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 2000. He completed his general surgery residency in 2006, and is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Jackson’s research interests include cardiovascular physiology and imaging. His current projects involve the imaging of three-dimensional cardiovascular structures, especially using real-time three-dimensional echocardiography.

Research
Dr. Jackson’s research interests include cardiovascular physiology and imaging. His laboratory’s current projects involve the imaging and modeling of three-dimensional cardiovascular structures, especially using real-time three-dimensional echocardiography and numerical modeling.

Current Endeavors Include:

Real-time 3D Ultrasound to Diagnose and Stage Carotid Occlusive Disease
This work hypothesizes that real-time three-dimensional ultrasound – a novel imaging technology – can accurately diagnose and stage carotid occlusive disease. Like Duplex ultrasound, this imaging technique is entirely noninvasive, carries no risk to the patient, and there exist no contraindications to its use.

Echocardiography to Predict Persistent and Recurrent IMR after Mitral Valve Repair
This project will assess the utility of newly-developed three-dimensional echocardiographic measures of annular size and leaflet tenting (subvalvular remodeling) for predicting persistent and recurrent ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) after mitral valve repair.

Mecahnical Modeling of Aortic Dissection
We are undertaking investigations of the pathophysiology of aortic dissection utilizing CTA, 3D modeling, and numerical stress analysis. The aim of these studies will be to better understand and develop novel management strategies for aortic dissections.
