Goals and Objectives – Penn Presbyterian Medical Center

  1. Patient Care
    1. The resident will be able to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
    2. The resident will have ample opportunity and responsibility for the care of patients with anorectal and colonic diseases.
    3. The resident will obtain technical competence in standard and advanced surgical procedures pertaining to treatment of the patient with diseases of the colon and rectum.
    4. The operative focus at PPMC will be on advanced laparoscopic procedures for diseases of the colon and rectum and surgical management of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
  2. Medical Knowledge
    1. The residents will demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and social-behavioral sciences, as well as the application of this knowledge to patient care.
    2. The resident will obtain and demonstrate medical knowledge pertaining to the topics listed in Section II. of the program’s overall goals & objectives.
    3. The resident will obtain sufficient knowledge of those aspects of anesthesiology, radiology, and pathology that relate to colon and rectal surgery to develop overall competence as a specialist.
    4. The resident will take the Colon and Rectal Surgery In-Training Examination as a means of demonstrating acquisition of knowledge and demonstrating areas of deficient knowledge.
    5. The resident will demonstrate his/her knowledge during formal presentations at appropriate divisional and departmental educational conferences.
  3. Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
    1. Residents must demonstrate the ability to investigate and evaluate their care of patients, to appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and to continuously improve patient care based on constant self-evaluation and life-long learning.
    2. The resident will demonstrate the ability to critically appraise the medical literature and apply it to practice-based improvement in the context of departmental morbidity and mortality conferences and divisional journal clubs.
    3. Residents are expected to develop skills and habits to be able to meet the following goals:
      1. Identify strengths, deficiencies, and limits in one’s knowledge and expertise
      2. Set learning and improvement goals.
      3. Identify and perform appropriate learning activities.
      4. Systematically analyze practice using quality improvement methods, and implement changes with the goal of practice improvement.
      5. Incorporate formative evaluation feedback into daily practice.
      6. Locate, appraise, and assimilate evidence from scientific studies related to their patients’ health problems.
      7. Use information technology to optimize learning.
      8. Participate in the education of patients, families, students, residents and other health professionals.
      9. Teach to contribute to the educational process.
        1. Teaching will be a regular part of the training program.
        2. The resident should assist when possible in the instruction of general surgical residents and medical students, as well as nurses, and other allied health professional
  4. Interpersonal and Communication Skills
    1. Residents must demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information and collaboration with patients, their families, and health professionals.
    2. The resident will complete a validated online simulated curriculum in developing communication skills and understanding the role of effective communication in preventing errors in patient safety.
    3. Residents are expected to communicate effectively with patients, families, and the public, as appropriate, across a broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
    4. Residents will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with physicians, other health professionals, and health related agencies.
    5. The resident will work effectively as a member or leader of a health care team or other professional group.
    6. The resident will demonstrate the ability to act in a consultative role to other physicians and health professionals.
    7. The resident will maintain comprehensive, timely, and legible medical records.
  5. Professionalism
    1. Residents must demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities and an adherence to ethical principles.
    2. Residents are expected to demonstrate:
      1. Compassion, integrity, and respect for others.
      2. Responsiveness to patient needs that supersedes self-interest.
      3. Respect for patient privacy and autonomy.
      4. Accountability to patients, society and the profession.
      5. Sensitivity and responsiveness to a diverse patient population, including, but not limited to, diversity in gender, age, culture, race, religion, disabilities, and sexual orientation.
    3. The resident will view the LIFE (Learning to Address Impairment and Fatigue to Enhance Patient Safety) Curriculum.
      1. This is a 2-DVD program sponsored by the Duke University School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education that provides education regarding workplace fatigue, stress & depression, substance abuse, disruptive behavior, burnout, boundary violations, and impairment among physicians.
  6. Systems-Based Practice
    1. Residents must demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care, as well as the ability to call effectively on other resources in the system to provide optimal health care.
    2. Residents are expected to:
      1. Work effectively in various health care delivery settings and systems relevant to their clinical specialty
      2. Coordinate patient care within the health care system relevant to their clinical specialty
      3. Incorporate considerations of cost awareness and risk-benefit analysis in patient and/or population based care as appropriate.
      4. Advocate for quality patient care and optimal patient care systems
      5. Work in interprofessional teams to enhance patient safety and improve patient care quality
      6. Participate in identifying system errors and implementing potential systems solutions.
