First Year Fellowship Program

The Department of Surgery has established an six-week fellowship for MS1 students during the summer following the first year of medical school. This unique program affords pre-clinical students the opportunity to interact one-on-one with a surgeon on the Penn Faculty, learning about his or her day-to-day activities and helping out in the operating room, office and laboratory. The specifics of the projects involved are left to the discretion of the surgeon and student, though a presentation summarizing your experience at the Agnew meeting of the following school year is required.

The department provides a stipend for the six-week period, and applications are judged on the strength of the proposed projects as well as the students expressed interest in surgery. Applications are considered during the spring of the first year. Please forward your application and supporting materials, including your CV, to Dr. Rachel Kelz (rachel.kelz@uphs.upenn.edu).

This year, there will be seven sponsored positions, with a stipend of $1000.00 for the 6 week fellowship term. A $500 travel expense will be covered if project leads to a national presentation.

To Apply:

  1. Applicants must be currently enrolled medical students and in good standing at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine at the time of application submission and award distribution.
  2. Use the shadowing program to explore various areas of surgical practice, and think about what fields you find most interesting. Research must be performed with a department of surgery investigator.
  3. Contact Rachel Kelz (rachel.kelz@uphs.upenn.edu) with a list of potential mentors, and then email the faculty to arrange meetings with them.
  4. Submit the application, by February 1, 2012.

All applications for 2012 will be due February 1,
but PRE APPROVAL regarding the mentor must be obtained from Dr. Kelz by January 1, 2012.

Please contact Dr. Kelz with any questions, and we look forward to another successful summer.
