Transplant Surgical Research

Ali Naji, M.D., Ph.D.

The basic and translational research activity in Dr. Naji's laboratory is directed in three fronts:

  1. The immunobiology of rejection and tolerance to tissue and organ allografts. Specific emphasis is placed on the induction of immune tolerance to pancreatic islet transplants as the most specific therapy for diabetes mellitus.
  1. The cellular and molecular basis of immune pathogenesis of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Specifically, the role of B-lymphocytes as antigen presenting cells for the activation of islet reactive T lymphocytes is pursued.
  1. Clinical trials of isolated pancreatic islet transplantation in patients with Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus.
