Colon and Rectal Surgery

Najjia N. Mahmoud, M.D.

Current Research
Colorectal Cancer Surgery Outcomes: Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer mortality in the US. Surgery is currently the only known treatment resulting in cure of this disease. Examination of outcomes of surgery for colorectal cancer is the focus of current research efforts.

Rectal Cancer Database
(institutional—University of Pennsylvania)

  • Efforts center on defining optimal neoadjuvant treatment in advanced stage rectal cancer with increased sphincter preservation and morbidity the primary endpoints.
  • Use of this prospectively maintained database to define factors influencing medical and surgical outcomes in rectal cancers by age, race, and gender based on treatment and tumor stage.

SEER-Medicare Database. Use of a national database linked to Medicare files to better understand and identify trends in the outcomes of the medical and surgical care and treatment of colorectal cancer patients.

  • Define differences in care based upon treatment location/institutional variations.
  • Examine how differences in presentation of colorectal cancer impacts upon disease-free and overall survival.
  • Investigate ways in which trends in treatment of colorectal cancer diffuse through the US.
  • Explore how widely adopted “quality measures” such as lymph node harvest influence and change the surgical treatment of colon and rectal cancer.

Clinical Trials: The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery is committed to ongoing efforts to improve perioperative care and long-term outcomes in the surgical treatment of colorectal disease through clinical trials.
  • 2004 Investigator Adolor Protocol 14CL314: A Multicenter, Phase III, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Parallel Study of ADL 8-2698 in Opioid Induced Postoperative Bowel Dysfunction/Postoperative Ileus (closed).
  • 2004 Co-Investigator: Recurrence Rate and Sexual Function following Rectocele Repair using Pelvicol Medical Device (closed).
  • 2006 Co-Investigator: American College of Surgeons Clinical Oncology Group (ACOSOG) Z6041—A Phase II Trial of Neoadjuvant Chemoradiation and Local Excision for uT2N0 Rectal Cancer (ongoing).
  • 2007 Investigator: Adolor 14CL401 Observational Trial: A Prospective, Observational, Multicenter Study Assessing Early Postoperative Recovery Following Laparoscopic Partial Large Bowel Resection (ongoing).
