The Historic Library has many titles important to the study of natural history
which contain vivid illustrations of flora and fauna.

Hospital staff served their country in the World Wars and
other conflicts.

Psychiatry
Psychiatric care has a long tradition at Pennsylvania Hospital.
The majority of patients that presented themselves at
the Hospital in its earliest years
were "Lunaticks"(sic).

Schools of Nursing at Pennsylvania
Hospital
From 1914 to 1965, there were two distinct nurse training
schools here, one for women, the other for men.

Surgical Amphitheatre
The oldest existing surgical amphitheatre in the United States
was constructed in 1804.

Works that Altered the Course
of Modern Medicine
The greats of medicine are well represented at Pennsylvania
Hospital. Early editions of Vesalius, Morgagni, Harvey, and
Pare, to name just a few, can be
found in the Historic Library.
- Anatomical Drawings
From Pastels to PDA's: Medical Education from the 18th c.
to the 21st c. exhibits our collection of sixteen Jan Van
Rymsdyk anatomical drawings for the first time together in
one display. Opening to the public on December 1, 2009, this
exhibition is sure to engage visitors interested in the history
of medicine.
