  • Natural History
    The Historic Library has many titles important to the study of natural history which contain vivid illustrations of flora and fauna.

  • Pennsylvania Hospital Serves in War
    Hospital staff served their country in the World Wars and other conflicts.

  • Psychiatry
    Psychiatric care has a long tradition at Pennsylvania Hospital. The majority of patients that presented themselves at the Hospital in its earliest years were "Lunaticks"(sic).

  • Schools of Nursing at Pennsylvania Hospital
    From 1914 to 1965, there were two distinct nurse training schools here, one for women, the other for men.

  • Surgical Amphitheatre
    The oldest existing surgical amphitheatre in the United States was constructed in 1804.

  • Works that Altered the Course of Modern Medicine
    The greats of medicine are well represented at Pennsylvania Hospital. Early editions of Vesalius, Morgagni, Harvey, and Pare, to name just a few, can be found in the Historic Library.
