FAQs

How do I register?

  • UPHS employees: Register through Knowledge Link.
  • Search for ACLS, PALS, or BLS in the course catalog and select the appropriate entity.
  • Complete the required Welcome Letter/Pledge before selecting a course date.


How do I cancel my course?

  • Cancel in Knowledge Link at least 7 business days before the course.
  • After that deadline, contact Chet Zaremski at Chet.Zaremski@pennmedicine.upenn.edu.
  • Late cancellations and no-shows are subject to the course fee.

Which ACLS course should I take?

  • Recertification: For providers with a current certification or one expired less than one month. Choose either the traditional classroom course or HeartCode (online plus Skills Check).
  • Initial certification: For first-time providers or certifications expired more than one month. The traditional 1.5-day course is recommended. HeartCode is available but is best suited for experienced providers.

How should I prepare for ACLS?

  • Review the ACLS Provider Manual.
  • Complete all required pre-course work.
  • Bring a copy of your current ACLS card when attending a recertification course.
  • Review ACLS algorithms before class.

Which PALS course should I take?

  • Recertification: Current certification or expired less than one month.
  • Initial certification: First-time providers or certification expired more than one month.
  • HeartCode: Online course followed by an in-person Skills Check.

Which BLS course should I take?

  • Current BLS providers may enroll in the classroom renewal course.
  • HeartCode BLS is available online and requires an in-person Skills Check.

I can’t find my course in Knowledge Link.

  • Confirm that you are not already enrolled.
  • Verify that you are eligible for the course.
  • If the issue continues, contact the IS Service Desk.

Do I need BLS before taking ACLS or PALS?

  • BLS certification is not required, but participants must be able to perform high-quality CPR.
  • Check with your department for job-specific requirements.

How do I get the provider manual?

  • Provider manuals are recommended for all live courses.
  • HeartCode learners receive online access.
  • Manuals are available through the Simulation Center and online retailers.

What is a Skills Check?

  • An in-person skills assessment required after completing the HeartCode online course.
  • BLS Skills Checks are completed using a voice-assisted manikin.

How do I access HeartCode?

  • Simulation Center approval is required before starting the online course.
  • After completing Part 1, schedule the in-person Skills Check through Knowledge Link.
